789 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade

2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, WWI British Mon-Star Trio with 5th-Aug-22nd Nov 1914 clasp, awarded to 2521 Private James Carter, 25th Brigade, 8th Division, 'Old Contemptible', Carter was within one of the communication trenches, heading towards the front line with the battalion, they are then met by heavy machine gun fire and shelling, the battalion was driven back, a large number of British casualties, including Carter, he was evacuated to Highfield Hall Hospital, Southampton with having a broken shoulder blade, with shrapnel in his back and shoulder, once he recovered he was declared unfit for War Service, he is entitled to wear the Wound Stripe, he then volunteered to help guard Southampton Docks original ribbons AF
