A mid-19th Century anodised brass Alphanumeric Indicator from Wilde's 1861 Globe Telegraph

Sold for £70
Estimated at £100 - £150

A mid-19th Century anodised brass Alphanumeric Indicator from Wilde's 1861 Globe Telegraph, of spherical form (or globular, to follow company name) with paper dial, needle indicator, winding arbor to dial rim, bell to back, with steel shaft and butterfly nut to secure to wooden plinth, plinth and transmitter missing, 100mm diam., 1861-1865, F, tear to dial; Dr Henry Wilde (1833-1919) developed various devices, including lightning conductors and electro-deposition devices, but his foray into telegraph instruments was brief following litigation; it is probable that a similar instrument, mounted on a figure of Atlas rather than a plain plinth, was exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition in South Kensington.
