Sold for £950
Estimated at £800 - £1,200

A Regency era gold brooch from Watier's Fête of 1814 with a Tassie cameo of the Duke of Wellington, oval brooch fashioned in the form of a crowned laurel wreath, ribbon to the bottom lettered "PEACE 1814". Reverse engraved "WATIER'S / 1 July 1814". Also fitted with an original bail/loop and with a chain and pin so it can worn in various ways. 4.5 cm high x 3 cm wide. Currently presented in a velvet lined red buckram Asprey & Co box. Note:- The exclusive "Watier’s Club" had been established in 1807 at 81 Piccadilly, under the patronage of the Prince Regent himself. It derived its name from the Regent’s chef and Maitre D’Hôtel at Carlton House Jean-Baptiste Watier. Membership consisted of some of the Prince’s more extrovert male friends. Nicknamed the ‘Dandies Club’ by Byron (who was a member), Beau Brummell was viewed as ‘Perpetual President’. It was mainly a dining and gambling club but there was a crossover between membership of Watier’s and the male membership of Almack’s Club (which had female members and dancing). During the ‘Glorious Peace of 1814’ Watier’s hosted a magnificent masquerade ball at Burlington House on 1st July. The event became legendary in Regency society. In his diary John Cam Hobhouse estimated some 1,700 people sat down for dinner. Harriette Wilson, Wellington's mistress, recalled queuing for hours in her carriage in Piccadilly, such was the throng. Byron was amused to see Watier’s 1814 masquerade parodied in the Theatre Royal’s Pantomime of 1815/16.
