A 1930s Steiff Teddy Bear with family provenance including escaping during WW2 from Austria and photographs, with golden mohair, clear and black glass eyes with brown backs, pronounced muzzle, remains of black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump, inoperative growler and FF underscored button —17 1/2in. (44.5cm.) high (slight wear and thinning, feet pads a bit stained and hole in left hand pad); sold with two original photographs of Waltraud with her bear, both dated 1939 - the childhood bear of Waltraud Niedermayer born in Vienna, 13th June 1938. He was given to her by her aunt Grete Rehor, who later became the first female minister in Austria. They left Vienna in 1940 as Waltraud’s father was held by the Nazi regime, and her mother, Waltraud and her bear walked the 400 plus miles to Switzerland and lived there until the end of the war. He later came to England when Waltraud married an Englishman and lived with her until her death in 2001.
