Big Ted - a rare large 1920s Bing Teddy Bear who belonged to three generations of Master Mariners with full provenance, with frosted brown mohair, clear and black glass eyes with brown backs, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump and inoperative growler —28in. (71cm.) high (neat small patch and slight holes to top of muzzle, pads with backed holes, faded to grey, some general wear and thinning) - this bear belonged to three generations of Master Mariners, purchased by Captain R Pritchard when he coasted the Blue Funnel ships Elpenor and Agapenor to Germany in 1927, and brought him back for his son Idwal Pritchard, who later also became a Master Mariner. He was then passed onto his younger brother, Richard Glynne Pritchard born in 1939, sold with an album of history and three copies of photographs, one of a cousin of Evan’s, May holding the bear circa 1930, another of Gylnne wheeling Ted in a wheelbarrow circa 1947 and a photograph of Glynne and Idwal at a ship’s controls; the photographs are available as jpegs from the department
